Riding a bicycle is a great way to exercise and have some fun, but don’t forget that riding
a bicycle comes with responsibility. Bicycles are vehicles under Wisconsin law and bicyclists must follow the bicycle rules of the road. Following the rules, especially when it comes to riding a bike at night, promotes safety on the roads for both bicyclists and motor vehicle operators.
To help celebrate National Bike to Work Week, we wanted to share some important information that will help you be prepared to ride your bicycle at night.
At Murphy & Prachthauser, we want to make sure that you and your family stay safe. Here are 4 great tips every bike rider should know:
- When riding bicycles at night it is important to keep in mind that under Wisconsin law, motor vehicles are required to illuminate their lights when it gets dark. The same rules hold true for bicycles. Bicyclists are not allowed to ride their bikes on a road, sidewalk, bicycle lane, or bicycle after dark unless the bike has the appropriate lights or reflectors.
- The front of the bicycle must have a white light attached that will emit the light at least 500ft in front of the bicycle.
- The back of the bicycle must have a red reflector that is at least 2 inches of surface area and that is visible from all distances between 50 and 500ft behind the bicycle
- The back of a bicycle can also be equipped with a flashing light, instead of a red reflector. You are permitted to use a flashing red light only if it can be seen from 500ft behind the bicycle.
These lighting requirements are the minimum safety standards for riding a bicycle at night. However, additional reflective equipment can only enhance your visibility and safety at night and help you prevent a bike accident.
Enjoy National Bike to Work Week and make sure you are equipped to ride safely in your community!
